Dean 102 - "Wet and Dirt Lab"

Picture of a student working in Dean 102.

This room is for "dirty" lab and teaching work. This includes, but is not limited to: soils (geoarchaeology), ceramics, early stages of faunal work, and washing of all artifacts. Dean 102 should be the first stop for much of the archaeological material arriving from the field. Soils, most ceramics, and unwashed ecofacts should remain in this room until they are sent to storage. The exception is foreign soils--see Permits section.

The following equipment should be used only in this room:

  • Drying Oven

  • Soil Splitter

  • Soil Sieve Shaker

  • Soil Mixer

  • Muffle Furnaces (2)

  • Kiln

  • Vacuum Impregnation Device

  • Diamond Saws (2)

  • Grinders & Polishers

The Flotation Machine is to be used only OUTSIDE because it leaks. The labs manager is presently looking into the possibility of moving it down to our storage facilities where it can be used when needed.

Low-end microscopes, scales/balances, calipers, Munsell Color Charts, etc. will be kept in this room for lab work. Work requiring weighing materials to a very high level of accuracy, or using the better microscopes, can be done in Dean 202.

Dean 102 is not air conditioned. The windows on the Diamond Head end of the room get full sun for most of the day. The most effective way to keep the room relatively cool is to keep the blinds on that wall closed at all times. The other windows can be left open during the day, and electric fans are available to supplement the tropical breezes.

Please keep the windows closed in this room when it’s not being used, and try to avoid using the room at night when termites are swarming.
