UH Anthropology Dept. Archaeology Program Labs Guide Home Page Permits The labs manager is responsible for overseeing compliance with all permit conditions relating to our labs. Please cooperate with this process, otherwise it will be necessary to remove your name(s) from the list of those with permission to make use of these permits. Both a Federal and a State permit are required to bring foreign soils into Hawaii. The U.H. Dept. of Anthropology, Archaeology Labs, hold these permits, under strict supervision and frequent inspection by both agencies. Please consult with the labs manager prior to going into the field when you expect to be bringing foreign soils back with you. You will generally be given copies of the Federal and State permits to carry with you. These permits include instructions for packing the soils for transportation. Follow the instructions! Upon return from the field, unsterilized soils must be stored (locked) in Dean 202A. It is the P.I.s responsibility to see that all foreign soils are sterilized according to the Instructions For Soil Sterilization within two (2) weeks of their arrival in the archaeology labs. If sterilization will interfere with intended analysis, the analysis must be done in a timely manner (discuss this with the labs manager as soon as you return from the field) and the soil and effluent then sterilized. Once sterilization is completed, submit a Completion of Soil Sterilization Notice to the labs manager. The labs manager will forward this information to the Federal and State permitting agencies. We maintain a permit from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to collect dead birds for the purpose of expanding our bird bone reference collections. Strict records of collections must be kept, and a report submitted annually. Foreign Dead Things of Any Kind A single-use permit must be acquired before importing any foreign (recently) dead things (things that have any organic material remaining) for the purposes of any kind of research or reference collection. These permits are difficult to obtain, and even more difficult to comply with. Please do not plan to import foreign dead things unless it is absolutely necessary. If you must do so, consult with the labs manager as soon as possible before leaving for the field. Important Links: Hawaii
