Teaching & Reference Collections
General Information

The labs have a number of resources available for teaching and reference purposes. Most of these are listed in the following table. Because many of these materials are part of site-specific archaeological collections, they need to be kept locked when not in use. Contact the labs manager about scheduling use of these materials.

If you’re not familiar with these resources, the labs manager will be happy to show them to you.

Artifacts

 
Hawaiian Artifacts

Materials from the Islands of Hawai'i, O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i, Lana'i, and Nihoa, derived primarily from UH field projects. Inventories of most of these collections are available.
Old and New World Artifacts Casts of Oldowan tools, type-artifacts including Clovis and Folsom points, misc. Paleolithic and Neolithic materials including handaxes, projectile points, scrapers, etc., ceramic fragments surface-collected from a number of sites in the American Southwest. A nearly complete inventory of this collection is available.
Historic Bottles This collection is under construction. It includes whole and fragmentary bottles showing major characteristics of bottle types and manufacturing &/or technological details. A student project paper provides a great deal of information about these bottles.
Historic Ceramics

Also under construction, a growing collection of historic ceramic types and designs.
Lithic Technology Reference Collection

Examples of different types of rock; replications of many lithic tool types, and the manufacturing debitage from these tools; and examples of specific diagnostic characteristics. This collection belongs to the labs manager, and can only be used in Dean 203 under supervision. A (partial) inventory is available.
Show & Tell Grab Bag The bottom cabinet closest to the hallway door has a collection of lithics and ceramics bits and pieces, and a flat of unsorted midden that you can borrow without going through the labs manager. BUT, please be considerate and return them from whence they came when you’re done with them.

Flora and Fauna

 

Hawaiian Plants This collection has a growing number of  plants commonly found in Hawaii.  Includes dried leaves, stems, flowers, and nuts/seeds.  A partial inventory of this collection is available.
Hawaiian Marine Shells

This collection is fairly comprehensive for much of the shell midden material found in Hawaiian sites.  An inventory is in progress.
Fish Bones (caution--approx. 320kb)

Our fish bone reference collection presently contains approx. 260 fish which were collected primarily from Hawaii and Fiji, with a few from Australia.  An inventory of this collection is available.
Bones, Other Includes a wide range of birds, mammals, and amphibians.  A partial list is available.
Early Man Fossil Casts Basic collection of "early man" casts.
